Lady In The Field
Lady standing in a field,
In a long white dress,
Tilts her hat and looks at me,
Through the dust and sweat.
I can see her eyes,
I can feel her breath,
She mouthes some words to me,
Left her standing there.
I blink and the birds sing for me,
I’m sitting in the car thinking.
Young man in this world,
Dug earth for my bread,
Met a girl who loved me,
Said she’d share my bed.
Saying she was leaving me,
Only for one night,
I need to see my folks, she said,
So I picked a fight.
I know you are not leaving me, but
I’m not gonna hurt again.
A small time is forever, this
Is how our story ends.
It’s fifty years have flown by so fast,
It’s 3am the trucks are driving past.
Fear has taken our time, so
I‘m walking to her, and
I’m searching.
Heading to that field,
Been a long, long time,
Will she be there?
Flowers in her hair?
Lady in that field,
See how we have grown?
Church bells toll,
Earth feeds my soul.
